South Africa Launches Biometric ETA

South Africa has officially launched its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), introducing biometric verification and machine learning into the country’s immigration and border management processes.

President Cyril Ramaphosa launched the system at OR Tambo International Airport on 12 August, alongside Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber. The government describes the ETA as a cornerstone of its digital immigration system and a flagship component of the Department of Home Affairs’ wider digital transformation programme.

The online application process requires travellers to photograph their passport, provide personal and journey information, take a live image of themselves, pay the relevant fee and submit the application electronically. The live facial image is used as part of the biometric verification process, while machine learning supports risk assessment before the traveller arrives in S. Africa.
